The present situation requires both a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and adaptation to the inevitable impacts of climate change. Both mitigation of and adaption to climate change call for a holistic, cross-boundary, crossdiscipline approach, involving many sectors, such as transport, energy, infrastructure, urban development and natural resource use, together with protection of natural systems and the wider environment. Ramboll is among the world’s leading consultants, offering planning and implementation services for climate adaptation and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. We serve both the public and private sectors, at national, regional and local levels. We help our customers quantify the financial implications of climate change, and find alternative solutions for the consequences – mitigation as well as adaptation.
Climate strategy
Professional and lasting efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions require clear climate strategies. At Ramboll, we collaborate with our customers to produce holistic climate strategies that explore the most realistic and achievable solutions. We make an overall assessment of our customer’s emissions, the potential for reduction of their own emissions as well as the possibility of Joint Implementation (JI) and Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects, and an assessment of their carbon trading potential.
Climate adaptation strategies are carefully formulated through detailed consultation with our customers to achieve holistic solutions set against a long-term perspective. We evaluate the impact of our projects in light of our wider climate mitigation and climate adaption objectives and we consult on proactive solutions, including the implementation of preventative and protective measures.
Reducing greenhouse gas emissions
For energy intensive customers, both public and private, we carry out a detailed assessment of the potential for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. We offer tailored solutions including use of renewable energy sources, energy efficient distribution and energy conservation technologies. All aspects of a company’s operations are considered, like the use and maintenance of buildings, transport and infrastructure and land use planning.
Adapting to a changing climate
It is generally accepted that global warming and the consequent loss of polar ice will lead to a rise in global sea level, increasing the risk of flooding in low-lying, coastal regions. An increase in the frequency and severity of extreme weather patterns is likely to further increase this risk, contributing to flooding from rivers and from urban drainage systems of insufficient capacity. These challenges call for adaptive measures in river basin management, water supply, wastewater management and agriculture, to name just a few.
Our experience in modelling and risk assessment of flooding from the sea, from rivers and drainage systems allows our customers to make informed decisions about future investments. Environmentally and financially sustainable solutions rely on an evaluation of flood risk and costs for climate adaptation. Investment in climate-adapted buildings and infrastructure can help to safeguard standards of living and can avoid undesirable human and material costs from extreme weather and flooding.
We help our clients mastermind their planning to satisfy the EU Floods Directive and quantify their risk and exposure to flooding. We offer innovative, cost-effective solutions for these and other climate change-related challenges.
